4. A World Without Pollinators?!
Background
Bees, butterflies, hummingbirds and other pollinators help make the world go around for three main reasons:
- They give us delicious, healthy foods to eat, like blueberries, tomatoes and even cocoa beans that we use to make chocolate. These foods are full of vitamins and minerals that are important for our health.
- They give us healthy ecosystems because they pollinate most of the trees and colourful plants that we see in your backyards, on our way to school, in natural areas like forests and meadows and everywhere in between. These plants provide food, shelter and places to live for wildlife and they provide us with clean air and many natural resources.
- They help to grow our economy because harvesting and selling fruits, vegetables and other pollinator products (like honey or cotton) creates jobs and makes money for many people.

What would happen if pollinators suddenly disappeared? Can you imagine a world without pollinators?
Task
What do you think a world without pollinators would be like?
Create a piece of art or write a story about a world without pollinators and compare that to the colourful world we know where pollinators help make the world go around.
Be as creative as you like but if you’re stuck, here are some ideas for your scene:
- A flower or vegetable garden
- A natural setting, like a forest or meadow
- A farm or orchard
- A farmer’s market
- A grocery store
- Any combination of these!
Option 1: ART
If you choose to create a piece of art, try dividing your piece in half. One half should show a scene with pollinators. The other half should show how you imagine that scene would look without pollinators.
Be as creative as you like, you can draw, paint, use a computer program, cut out images, use sidewalk chalk – anything goes. Just check in with your teacher first.
Share a picture of your art in the gallery section in the folder called “A World Without Pollinators Art”.
Option 2: WRITING
If you choose to write a story, try dividing your story in half. One half should describe a scene with pollinators. The other half should describe how you imagine that scene would look without pollinators.
Share your story in the writing section in the folder called “A World Without Pollinators Stories”.
